How to get Travel Insurance when you have a Heart Condition

Before getting your Travel Insurance, you’ll need to get a quote. We’re a Specialist Medical Travel Insurance provider, and we cover all conditions. The first step is to complete a medical screening process. During the medical screening process, we’ll ask you a few questions about your heart condition.

We will also ask about any other pre-existing medical conditions you might have. We’ll ask things like:

  • What age were you when diagnosed?
  • Are you currently undergoing treatment or is any planned?
  • When was the last time you had a cardiac episode?

We’ll use this information and your unique medical history to provide the best coverage for your trip. It’s important to give us the most accurate information during the medical screening process. We cannot cover any costs related to medical issues that aren’t declared. If your medical history isn’t accurate, you may have to pay for unexpected medical costs.

AllClear’s Travel Insurance for Heart Conditions with other pre-existing medical conditions

Our survey showed that 62% of people have more than one pre-existing health condition3. This may be a secondary condition caused by your heart condition or a different condition.

Simply declare conditions during the medical screening process. Then, we can create a Travel Insurance quote that works for you.

You must disclose to us if you or anyone else insured on the policy has:

  • In the last two years, taken any prescribed medication or received medical treatment or advice at a hospital, clinic, GP surgery or via remote consultation;
  • Received or been offered palliative care;
  • Been placed on a waiting list that could cause you to cancel or curtail your trip;
  • Been advised of a terminal illness.

What our customers say

Winning hearts and minds

Going abroad shouldn’t have to be complicated. Here’s how we helped Michael Burt, the man who received the UK’s first-ever beating heart transplant and wanted to travel to the US.

“My wife and I were planning a trip to the US for a wedding in Maine,” Michael explains, “and were very much looking forward to it. With my heart condition, and having previously had cancer, it was essential that we had proper travel insurance. We had always been insured previously, and knew that if I were to fall ill, it could be very expensive, and so my wife Joy began searching. Little did we realise just how difficult it was going to be.”

Then Michael and Joy, his wife, found AllClear Travel. “It was just such a relief,” Joy says. “They asked me a series of questions around Michael’s conditions and were positive from the start. They were the only company who gave me the confidence that Michael could be insured.”

How much is Travel Insurance with a heart condition?

The cost of a Travel Insurance policy will always vary depending on a few factors, such as:

  • Your medical history
  • Your destination
  • How long you’re going for
  • What you’re doing while you’re there

By answering all of these questions, we know what kind of cover you’ll need in case of an emergency. This could cost extra at first, but save you in the long run.

Does Travel Insurance for Heart Conditions cost more?

Yes, Travel Insurance for Heart Conditions will cost more. This is due to the risk of a more expensive claim on your policy if you do need to claim. This is standard, and most insurers will operate this way.

Is high cholesterol a heart condition for Travel Insurance?

High cholesterol is considered a minor heart condition for travel insurance. As with any pre-existing condition, you’ll need to disclose this when getting a quote. Which heart conditions stop you from flying?

If you have these, you should delay flying until the condition is stable. Before you plan your holiday, always seek the advice of your cardiologist or GP.

Will the GHIC card cover medical treatment for my heart condition?

Yes, the GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) can cover the cost of your medical treatment for a heart condition. You can use it in most of the EU and some other countries. However, you’re not covered for other related expenses like travel home or private treatment. This goes for all pre-existing conditions. Be sure to check which countries accept GHICs before you travel.
